Hannah Monyer
Prof. Dr. Hannah Monyer is a leading German neuroscientist and an inspiring role model for women in science. As Professor and Medical Director of Clinical Neurobiology at Heidelberg University Hospital, her research has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of how neuronal networks support learning, memory and neuronal plasticity.
Born in Romania, Monyer emigrated to Germany in 1957 and studied medicine at Heidelberg University. In 1986, she took a decisive step from clinical medicine into research, moving to the United States to begin her scientific career as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stanford University Medical Center. She returned to Heidelberg in 1989, established her own research group in 1994 and became Medical Director in 1999.
Since then, Monyer has built an internationally recognised career in neuroscience, receiving numerous prestigious awards, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize and becoming a member of the Leopoldina, EMBO and other leading scientific academies.
Her career demonstrates that there is no single path into science. By bringing together medicine, molecular biology and neuroscience, her research on inhibitory interneurons, neuronal networks and synaptic plasticity has advanced our understanding of how the brain learns and remembers.
